John Grant Kruger, the son of Alfred Sr. and Myrtle (Evans) Kruger, was born May 2, 1930 in rural O’Brien County. He attended country school near Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1948. After graduating John served for eight years in the Iowa National Guard, where he was an expert marksman. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1956. On May 22, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dolores Mae Van Meeteren at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. The couple made their home on a farm north of Sheldon, where he enjoyed helping his dad on the family farm. They moved to Manilla, Iowa where he worked at Midwest Breeders. They moved to Sheldon where he worked for the Sanborn Creamery. He then worked as an independent jobber for Standard Oil for 9 ½ years. Then worked for the Farmers Co-op Elevator for 16 years until his retirement in 1992. John passed away March 30, 2018 at his home reaching the age of 87 years, 10 months and 28 days.
He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. John loved spending time with his family. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, bowling and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. John and Dolores loved traveling and spending winters in Texas.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Dolores of nearly 67 years; four sons, Ronald of Sheldon, Iowa; Darrell (Pam) of Harrisburg, South Dakota; Dennis (Lesa) of Sheldon, Iowa and Todd (Marie) of Sheldon, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Rachel (Adam) Jorgensen, Jason Kruger, Jill (Caleb) Haverdink, Darrell Jr. “DJ” Kruger, Elizabeth (Zach) Smith, Kurt Kruger, Jodi (Thomas) Bastron, Kori (Cody) TerMeer, Jenna (Justin) Zandstra, Kaci Kruger, 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Audrey (Bob) Magnuson of Portland, Oregon, one brother, Alfred Jr. (Linda) Kruger of Sheldon.
John was proceeded in death by his parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Marv Horn, a brother, Donald Kruger and one sister, Marilyn in infancy.

A ship sails away
